  16. directed the first Godzilla movie in 1954, and many others that
  17. followed. The cheap but compelling spectacle of the outsize
  18. lizard laying waste to Tokyo in movie after movie was much
  19. mocked--and much imitated in an age that grimly appreciated
  20. Honda's crude metaphor for the threat of nuclear doom.
